TV Sucks :: essays research papers
In this essay I am going to express my views on the bad aspects of TV, and explain what they are. Possibly, this essay may change your views on TV and how it is used. à à à à à The truth is that most TV shows suck. This is especially true in so-called situation comedies. The reason they have to add that stupid laugh track is so you know what part is supposed to be funny. If youââ¬â¢ll notice, the funniest and most successful shows donââ¬â¢t usually have laugh tracks, such as The Simpsons, because itââ¬â¢s a good enough written show that you can laugh at the parts you think are funny. Instead of the laughing machine telling you which parts are funny. Yet, people sit through shows that they donââ¬â¢t even like because they are too lazy to do anything else while they are waiting for a good show to come on. Personally, I have about 60 channels, and in an hour period of time, there is maybe one good show on. Thatââ¬â¢s not much to select from. Since televisionââ¬â¢s primary purpose is to advertise, you also have to sit through about 10 minutes of commercials per 30 minute program. So, a 30 minute show is, in reality, only ac tually 20 minutes. à à à à à TV is mind numbing. In order to reach its maximum potential audience, so that the sponsors can sell more product, TV shows have to be brought down in intelligence to the point of having little or no intellectual value or relevance. Which causes smart people to get unintelligent. TV is always moving at a fast speed, there is usually action or a confrontation in every scene of a show so that viewers donââ¬â¢t lose interest. This tends to make people bored in real life which is a bad thing because then you will get lazy and board, which will cause you to watch more TV (do you see the cycle). à à à à à à à à à à TV is too censored. Only a handful of corporations control what you can and canââ¬â¢t see on TV, and who are they to say what should be censored and what shouldnââ¬â¢t. Often, what happens, is that kids (aged 1-12) ruin it for everybody else, because even though they are a small part of the population, TVââ¬â¢s censorship is run at their needs. Itââ¬â¢s just the same as a classroom running at the speed of the least intelligent kid, which slows everybody else down.

The Imposter Phenomenon :: Women Imposter Phenomenon Essays
The Imposter Phenomenon The Imposter Phenomenon ââ¬â as defined by the ââ¬Å"Womenââ¬â¢s Studies Encyclopedia ââ¬â Revised and Expanded Editionâ⬠ed. Helen Tierney, 1999 "The Imposter Phenomenon is an internal experience of intellectual phoniness that seems to be prevalent among high-achieving persons, with particularly deleterious effects on womenâ⬠¦ It is an emotionally debilitating condition characterized by persistent and unwarranted anxiety about achievement, dread of evaluation, fear of failure and exposure, inability to internalize success, and lack of enjoyment of accomplishment and achievement." Nestled between the stacks on the 8th floor of Uris Library, I am King of the Hill. Through the window my realm is expansive: I can see Libe Slope stretching below me fringed with the solid, quiet beauty of the gothics. Beyond this, Cayuga Lake glimmers in the afternoon sun. I feel so powerful. Here I am at an Ivy League university with every resource and opportunity waiting to be discovered. I am so fortunate to be here. I look at my fellow students trudging purposefully up and down the slope. They are so small. Yet even from this distance I can see the confidence in their steps, their grace and determination, and the skillful way they carry the demands of an academic upon their shoulders. They are true knights of our university, fighting for understanding and mastery of their fields. In the light of their glory, my crown fades. Who am I to call myself King? I may be a knight but I am pretending. My armor is made of aluminum foil, my shield is cardboard. Even high in this tower, I am small. After hearing about the imposter syndrome for the first time, I couldnââ¬â¢t stop thinking about it. It was something I identified with but had never put a name to. How many times have I questioned myself and my abilities? I figured that it is a normal part of growing up, a personal insecurity as I try to discover who I am and where I fit in the web of life. I didnââ¬â¢t necessarily see it as a bad thing. But when I started doing research and saw how intelligent, capable, and talented adults are dealing with these same issues I began to see it as a pervasive problem. Especially when these professionals are turning down promotions because they feel they arenââ¬â¢t good enough, or are unhappy in life because they arenââ¬â¢t happy with themselves.

The Vernissage
This short story was written in 2008, so it is a quite new one. It is about Alex and his family. At the beginning of this short story, Alexââ¬â¢ mother is picking him up from school; they are talking about everyday experiences about his school and her new bought dress. The mother has bought a new dress for the Vernissage she is going to attend to with her husband the following evening. Therefore Alex is going to stay home and doing his homework with company of his babysitter Anne-Marie. At six oââ¬â¢clock his father is coming home. At this hour Alex is laying in his parentââ¬â¢s bedroom underneath his parentââ¬â¢s bed listening to his mother getting ready for the coming evening. When his father gets in to the room a conversation with few words begins. At the ending Alexââ¬â¢s parents walks out and he goes into the bathroom and begin brushing his teeth even though he is soon going to have dinner. As we already know has Alex been for school and he gets into his motherââ¬â¢s car with a bit trouble because of the group of mothers waiting outside the school gates. He is still a boy who loves banana sandwiches. Yet he still wants to grow older and no longer be considered a child (p. , l. 48) ââ¬Å"There was something about banana sandwiches, sweet and soft, that made him think of babyfood. Maybe he was getting too old for banana sandwiches,â⬠He loves his mother and has a better relationship to her than he has to his father, he talks and has a lot more contact to his mother shown throughout the whole short story. Considered his bad relationship to his father a nice example is shown (p. 3, l. 100) ââ¬Å"He hoped his father would not come looking for him ââ¬â but that would be unusual,â⬠Therefore it seems like his father doesnââ¬â¢t care that much for his son. Alex is also a very curious boy, or else he wouldnââ¬â¢t be asking so many questions to his mother so many times. After Alex has slipped into his parentââ¬â¢s bedroom he lies underneath the bed, and he is watching his mother while she is getting dressed and ready. In this scene we see the relationship between Alexââ¬â¢s parents. His father is going up the stairs to meet his wife. They are married, yet it feels like there is some sort of distance between them (p. 3, l. 107) ââ¬Å"The two pairs of legs kept their distance, about three feet between them,â⬠Alexââ¬â¢s mother is ery supportive towards her husband, he seems to be quite nervous for this evening (p. 3, l. 109) ââ¬Å"ââ¬Å"How are you feeling about tonight? â⬠ââ¬Å"OK. It should all go OK, I think. â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course it will. It will be great, John. â⬠â⬠Alexââ¬â¢s mother is searching for some sort of accept from Alexââ¬â¢s father whom she cannot achieve; she bought the purple dress for his sake, to look good for his special night and because he once said, the colour suited her, she listens to her husband, and it means a lot to her to come close to him. He does not listen to her (p. 3, l. 18) ââ¬Å"ââ¬Å"I told you I was going to buy a new dress; for tonight. Remember? â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, right. â⬠ââ¬Å"Do you like it? â⬠ââ¬Å"The dress? â⬠â⬠In this line we can see how he seems not to care that much for his whole family. Alexââ¬â¢s father keeps a certain distance to his own wife, and perhaps she feels shut out of his mind. She tries to get closer to him, (p. 4, l. 148) ââ¬Å"The woman took the hand and cupped it round her left breast. She held it there, as though it were a weak runt of a thing. â⬠She wants her husband to touch her, but still this seems not to make the biggest impression on him either. As the main theme I believe we have lost love. We see a mother, a wife who wants her husbandââ¬â¢s accept and she wants to feel him touching her not to reject her hand and begging. The mothers dress is purple; this stands for spirituality and is connected with the blood of sacrifice. Therefore I see the dress and the colour stands for her sacrifice to her husband. She truly wants to be a good and caring wife, support him in every way, she can. The white crepe paper stands for pureness and a new beginning. It can also mean loneliness and despair.

Annie Dillard “The Chase”
In Annie Dillardââ¬â¢s autobiography ââ¬Å"The Chaseâ⬠, she emphasizes and uses great detail in her different writing techniques to make the scenes in the story feel more alive or realistic. The attention of detail can be seen with her intense use of transitions and active descriptions in the actual chase scene. Dillard also uses tone and language of the characters to make the story feel more like actual real time events. In the first paragraph of ââ¬Å"The Chaseâ⬠, the narrator of the story a seven year old girl is informing the audience about the game of football. She says ââ¬Å"It was all or nothingâ⬠(Dillard 121). Basically stating that in football you have got to give all of your effort and not hesitate at all if you want to make the tackle and stop the offense. This do or die attitude is reflected later in the story during the chase scene. It is also the climax of the story. Being that a bunch of kids are together unsupervised, there is going to be some tro uble. That is exactly what happens next. The children are all gathered during a winter snowy day making snowballs next to a street throwing them at passing cars. Its wide black door opened; a man got out of it running. He didnââ¬â¢t even close the car door. â⬠This kind of unexpected thrill we can all relate to. Dillard adds even more by putting in the little details that make the reader feel the anger of this man and the feeling of weââ¬â¢re caught by the children that we have all felt as a kid is described in that same quote. By using these details in the story the reader can put themselves into the shoes of the characters.Dillard uses lots of active descriptions that are very real throughout the chase scene. She uses actual street names like Edgerton Avenue, Lloyd Street, Willard and Lang. This use of actual real names of streets makes the story. The reader can almost get lost in the chase itself with Dillardââ¬â¢s use of rapid transitions like up, around, under, th rough, down some, across, smashed. After the chase is over and the children are caught the reader feels tired

Ishmael Beahââ¬â¢s Experience in A long way Gone
The book A long way gone is a literary work that narrates the ordeals of a child-soldier in the hands of fate. The writer, Isheal Beah became a soldier at thirteen. As the enthralling story enfolds, he recounts his experience during and after the war. At twelve he had fled for the attacking rebels in his country, Sierra Leone into the streets turned insane by the violence of war. A year later he was converted to a soldier by the governmentââ¬â¢s army. This is where the heart-wrenching tale, a first class experience of a transformation from a young boy, with a tender heart to a killer boy begins. He was exposed to all the undiluted vices of war. From drugs that they were given to strengthen them and the ammunitions they were given to kill themselves with. He was given an AK-47 much heavier then his hands could carry. One moment an innocent boy, the next moment a ââ¬Å"killerboyâ⬠, capable of intense violence and terrible acts. Ishmeal tells his story with an unparallel truth bearing in mind other peopleââ¬â¢s feelings. Now twenty-six he looks back, down the memory lane at all he had been through, how he survived the war and how he survived his rehabilitation after the war. For three years he fought in the war until he was removed by UNICEF. With the help of the organization, he received rehabilitation, a re-transitional process to his former self before the war. Haunted by the warââ¬â¢s experience, the war was over truly, but the war within Ishmealââ¬â¢ heart continues. The rehabilitation experience was a story of self-war in itself, involving a self-forgiving process and a requisition of humanity long lost till eventually the final healing began to come. Ishmealââ¬â¢s experience reminds us of all the wars across the globe and how children have become the easy choice for these wars. With more than fifty wars going on, over 300,000 children have been converted to soldiers. All going through the trauma and hell that Ishmeal went through. The story fits into the trend of history in the twentieth century that was so full of African genocide, Gulf war and other wars around the world. The story also reminds us of the consequences of war, the unchecked genocide perpetrated by human to fellow humans and the effects of all these on several thousands of children and others, whose lives have been altered miserably by war. Ishmealââ¬â¢s story does this an alarming genuity and explicit emotional force. His experience is quite unique because he was not only a witness but also a victim. He saw and conquered. The story was written like a memoir which has not only added colour to the story but made it more unique, for he narrates them in first person that made it more gripping. His honesty is exacting, and a proof to the ability of children to outlive their sorrows and suffering, if given a chance. From his recounts of the burning villages and total destruction to all, the story raises the question in all rationale mindsâ⬠¦ what do human gain from war? ââ¬Å"My high school friends have begun to suspect I havenââ¬â¢t told them the full story of my life. â⬠ââ¬Å"Why did you leave Sierra Leone? â⬠ââ¬Å"Because there is a war. â⬠ââ¬Å"Did you witness some of the fighting? â⬠ââ¬Å"Everyone in the country did. â⬠ââ¬Å"You mean you saw people running around with guns and shooting each other? â⬠ââ¬Å"You should tell us about it sometime. â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, sometime. ââ¬
Miami Beach Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Miami Beach - Essay Example Miami Beach is one of my favorite cities; I have spent many vacations there since my childhood and have developed memorable moments and sites. This paper ââ¬Å"Miami Beachâ⬠is based on authorââ¬â¢s last visit to the city. The author offers a narrative essay about the place.Even though I had made many previous visits to the city, they had been self centered and purely recreational. We would spend time together as a family, visit a few places and friends in the city before travelling back home. I however made my last visit with a peer and the visitââ¬â¢s core objective was to explore the city for knowledge development. We therefore hired a guide to lead us and respond to our possible questions, an initiative from which we learnt of the cityââ¬â¢s history that developed from a farm to a real estate city. Planners in the nineteenth century designated the region for coconut plantation but housing developers changed the idea, decades later, to the current cityââ¬â¢s scop e. The generally hot weather, a characteristic of the cityââ¬â¢s climate, was enjoyable, a climate that promotes recreational activities at the beach. Even though the city experiences occasional durations of cold weather, it is generally hot and is either dry or humid, depending on its seasons. Further, we interacted with local residents but embraced a challenge in communication because they predominantly communicate in Spanish. My last trip to Miami Beach was therefore more informative as I learnt about the city, its geography, its history, and I directly interacted with its people.

Data Collection and Funding for Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Data Collection and Funding for - Research Paper Example sampling will be stratified. The number of patients will be differentiated into different categories because this can enhance the focus on certain percentage of people who can show higher probability of lower medication errors. Medical cards and day-today reports can also be used as an effective tool to identify hypothesis readily. The reason behind using this tool is because it allows gaining valuable data within very short span of time. Considering the case of SSC and CMT in lowered medication error, this manner of data collection is likely to be proven as effective. There can be limitations underlying with the process because there are less instances of people making use of CMT (Green, 2010). It should also be noted that the above mentioned tools are basically provided by a medical institution as per consent granted by patientââ¬â¢s family or patient and organization. These medical records are highly sensitive and cannot be claimed without consent and copyrighted documentation for its utilization in the research work. As a matter of fact, the researcher shall approach the authorities and write application forms for the families as well as the administration of the medical organization. This will surely take some time for clearance but once the consent is received then it will be easier to carry on with the research work i.e. data analysis. There could be a number of health care institutions that can be approached considering the significance of the research. It is surely the need of research regarding SSC and CMT relationship in having increased number of awareness of communicable diseases. Other than medical institutions that are involved in the contribution of innovation and assessment of medical phenomenon, there are various committees that provide research funding. These funding institutions serve the goal of evaluating lack of literature (Dupin & Chupin, 2013). In particular, organizations that are basically involved
